출판은 그 과정에서 책이라는 물질이 단순한 인쇄물이 아니라, 사회적 구조를 반영하는 매체이기도하다. 출판 과정 속에서 드러나는 위계, 성별 불균형, 그리고 교육과 계층의 편향성은 책의 물성과 긴밀히 연동되어 있다. 책의 형태와 디자인은 결코 중립적이지 않다. 그것은 지식을 생산하고 유통하는 구조 속에서 드러나는 권력의 결과물이기도 하다.
이 과정에서 책 구직활동은 이러한 권력 구조를 해체하고, 책의 물성을 다시 사유하기 위한 시도에서 시작되었다. 나의 서재에 꽂혀 있던 책들은 특정한 지식 체계와 계층적 미감을 반영하고 있었다. 나는 그 책들을 서재라는 권위적 공간에서 벗어나게 함으로써, 새로운 독자를 만나고 다른 해석의 가능성을 모색하고자 했다. 이 프로젝트에서 책은 '구직 중인 존재'로 전환된다. 더 이상 소유된 물건이 아니라, 스스로 새로운 관계를 찾아 나서는 주체가 된다.
2024년 5월, 나는 일부 책을 선별해 인스타그램에 '책 구직 폼'을 올렸다. 이후 여러 공간으로부터 제안을 받았고, 그중 세 가지 조건을 기준으로 장소를 선정했다. 첫째, 알려지지 않은 신생 공간일 것. 둘째, 서점의 형식을 갖추지 않을 것. 셋째, 누구나 접근이 가능한 곳일 것. 이러한 조건은 책의 권위를 최소화하고, 열린 만남이 가능한 환경을 만들기 위한 것이었다. 그 과정에서 공간 Hup을 만나게 되었고, 2024년 7월 28일과 29일, Temporary Shared Hub에서 프로젝트를 공유했다.
In this process, I realized that books are not merely printed materials but also media that reflect social structures. The hierarchies, gender imbalances, and educational and class biases revealed in the publishing process are closely interconnected with the materiality of books. The form and design of books are never neutral. They are also products of power that emerge from the structures that produce and distribute knowledge.
In this process, the book job-seeking activity began as an attempt to dismantle these power structures and reconsider the materiality of books. The books that were placed in my study reflected specific knowledge systems and hierarchical aesthetics. By removing them from the authoritative space of the study, I sought to meet new readers and explore possibilities for different interpretations. In this project, books transform into 'job-seeking beings'. They are no longer owned objects but subjects that seek new relationships on their own.
In May 2024, I selected some books and posted a 'book job-seeking form' on Instagram. After receiving proposals from various spaces, I selected locations based on three criteria. First, it should be an unknown new space. Second, it should not have the format of a bookstore. Third, it should be accessible to everyone. These conditions were intended to minimize the authority of books and create an environment where open encounters are possible. In this process, I met Space Hup and shared the project at Temporary Shared Hub on July 28 and 29, 2024.
