Book design and print production across formats.
Yirang Ok's work begins in the small gaps within the structures that surround design. The arrangement of bookshelves, indexing methods, the structure of archives, the location of servers, and the isolation of platforms look neutral from the outside, yet for some people they become barriers to entry. She reads those structures and asks whether another order is possible.
She first encountered publishing and production while studying visual design at Kaywon University of Art and Design. What mattered to her then was not the finished result but the question of who received production knowledge, and by what route. In particular, the fact that people at the very beginning of their practice had the least access to practical knowledge about paper, format, and printing became the starting point for her later work.
«Unfamiliar Encounter» [1], carried out while she was still a student, began from a structure in which seniors and juniors passed one another without properly meeting within a short curriculum. She interviewed seniors and practitioners, gathered paper samples and production information, and organized them into «Unfamiliar Paper» [2] and «Unfamiliar Format» [3], released through Tumblbug [4]. It was her first attempt to move production knowledge out of individual experience and into a form that others could use again.
She then studied communication design at Hongik University with minors in visual design and printmaking, and her interests widened to archives, print, and the art ecosystem [5]. With friends she continued conversations about veganism in art, environmental issues, artists' working conditions, and distribution channels, and carried out several experiments through publishing and the web. Along the way she began collecting ephemera [6], printed matter made without preservation in mind. In «Ephemera Archive Project» [7] she gathered discarded or soon-to-be-discarded flyers, tickets, letters, and notices, and asked what remains as a record and what disappears.
She worked as a book designer in the publishing department of Ahngraphics [8]. Alongside editing and designing books she was interested in designing the production process itself, and she gathered information that was needed repeatedly on site but scattered across sources, such as parent sheet standards, imposition units, and grain direction, into the Format Reference Table [9] and the Paper Order Calculator [10], which she released publicly. It was work that moved part of publishing labor into a shareable tool.
She then moved through «New Order», the small group «Unknown Order» [11], and «Coding Club», extending her view of publishing into coding environments. Questions of classification, access, distribution, and storage that she had handled on paper returned in another form on the web and on servers.
«Temporary Shared Hub» [12], presented at hup, moved a private bookshelf into a temporary shared space. It read the shelf not as a list of tastes but as a structure in which conditions such as education, labor, class, and gender accumulate, and looked at whom books travel from and to. In «The Meaning of Unreceived Messages: Lost in Transmission», which followed at Wreath and Towel, [13] she used the 404 error as a device for looking at undelivered messages, deleted records, and gaps in public records.
She is currently studying for an MA in Social Design at Design Academy Eindhoven [14] in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Moving between books, the web, servers, and archives, she continues to ask how information and tools are arranged and who can reach those structures.
She currently runs STstudio, a design studio.
