함수 이름, 에러 메시지, 문서, 튜토리얼. 한국어 사용자에게 코딩을 배우는 문턱은 종종 언어의 문턱과 겹친다. 진도가 막힌 초보자는 적성이 없다는 말을 듣지만, 정작 없는 것은 읽을 수 있는 문장일 때가 있다.

Function names, error messages, documentation, tutorials. For a Korean speaker the threshold of learning to code often overlaps with the threshold of language. A beginner who stalls is told they lack aptitude, when what they lack can be a sentence they can read.

그래서 작업은 모국어에서 시작했다. three.js 위에 한국어 층을 얹은 KRthree.js를 만들어 명령어를 한국어 문장에 가깝게 배치했다. 장면을 만들고, 상자를 놓고, 조명을 켠다. 영어 API를 먼저 외우기보다 3차원 공간의 논리를 자기 언어로 따라갈 수 있게 하기 위해서다.

So the work began in the mother tongue. KRthree.js, a Korean-language layer over three.js built for the workshop, places its commands close to Korean sentences. Make a scene, place a box, turn on a light. The aim is to follow the logic of a 3D space in one's own language rather than memorise an English API first.

워크숍은 2026년 7–8월 서점이자 공부방인 헙 금호에서 네 차례 진행했다. 디자인, 출판, 기획 분야에서 온 참가자 일곱 명 대부분이 이 자리에서 처음 자바스크립트를 써 보았다. 3D 장면을 읽고, 자신이 아카이브하고 싶은 사물을 촬영하거나 스캔하고, 브라우저 안에서 컬렉션을 조립한 뒤 각각의 프로젝트에 웹 주소를 만들었다. 사전 지식은 요구하지 않았다.

The workshop ran over four sessions at Hup Geumho, a bookshop and study room in Seoul, in July–August 2026. Seven participants came from design, publishing and curating, and most wrote their first line of JavaScript here. They read a 3D scene, photographed or scanned the objects they wanted to archive, assembled a collection in the browser, and gave each project its own web address. No prior knowledge was required.

슬라이드는 위에는 한국어, 아래에는 영어를 두었다. 번역을 도구 바깥의 보조 단계가 아니라 배우는 과정 자체에 포함시키기 위해서였다.

Slides carried Korean above and English below. The point was to keep translation inside the process of learning rather than treat it as a step taken outside the tool.

완성된 서가는 각각 Neocities의 실제 주소로 공개되었다. 디지털 서재와 실물 서재를 같은 방에서 나란히 읽을 수 있게 되었다.

Each finished shelf was published at its own address on Neocities, so the digital library and the physical one could be read side by side in the same room.
