The keyboard and mouse are so familiar that it is easy to forget they are interfaces someone chose. This session began by putting the two aside for a day and handling the web another way. It also looked at works that move a familiar input device into other materials and other uses, such as Jean Shin's «TEXTile» (2006), woven from hundreds of discarded keyboards.

Standardisation is easy to mistake for nature. Once a device is common enough it reads as a condition rather than a decision, and the one adapting is the person, not the machine. Taking the device away for a day makes that adapting visible: without a keyboard you become a person who cannot use a computer, one who does not even try another way.

A two-session offline making workshop held with Code Club × Yeongwon on 27 July and 3 August 2026 at Yeongwon (@01.works) in Mapo-gu, Seoul, an open space that moves between technology and art. The first session looked at the history of the keyboard and mouse and at examples of sensors and input devices, and the participants worked out the tool each of them would make. In the second they built the input devices from sensors, sound, cameras, foot pads and low-tech materials, presented the results, and closed with a small award ceremony — for fun, for technique, for critique.

No one took part as an engineer, and most were handling a sensor for the first time, so the conversation stayed closer to bodies and gestures than to the performance of components. The rule of the session was to remove one default — the keys, the pointer, the single user — and fill the gap another way. The results were far from efficient interfaces. None of them is proposed as a better interface; each is a way of seeing again that the present interface was also something someone chose.

The first session opened with a slide lecture — Why does it have to be a mouse? Are tools ever neutral? Setting a typewriter beside an early mouse, it traced how the keyboard and mouse were never natural from the start: they were devices built to experiment with how humans relate to computers, and hardened into standards. Using a computer is not just a process of entering commands and receiving responses; it is an embodied practice in which the body learns, adjusts and repeats within its environment. The sensors available to participants were then introduced one by one, along with an at-a-glance guide to how each of them works.

EXISTING DEFAULT → REMOVE ONE RULE → PROTOTYPE → TEST THROUGH USE → OBSERVE → QUESTION AGAIN

Eight tools came out of the second session. Kang Minseo built a device that scrolls Instagram by turning a throttle; Kim Gwahyeon an interface in which everyone who opens the same link tilts their own phone’s gyro sensor and shares a single cursor that only moves when their directions agree; Jeong Dachan a ping-pong game in which the body moving in front of the screen becomes the racket; Han Yongpa a screen where real-time point capture stands in for the cursor. Choi Jaehyeok made Pinterest browsable Mario-style, stepping and jumping on a foot pad instead of scrolling; Joshua a device that speeds up the train on screen when the toy train beside the dinner table goes faster; Yang Nawon a parody of the travel documentary «Walking Into the World» that walks through the web on foot; and Yoon Taejun an archive collecting the reading directions that lie outside the left-to-right flow web typesetting tools assume.

The two summer workshops take up the same question in different ways: is the threshold between those who make and those who learn really a matter of skill? «Building an Online 3D Library: Coding in Korean» ran as four evenings in a bookshop, «No Mouse No Keyboard No Problem» as two evening making sessions at Yeongwon. Where the first workshop shook language, the second shook the tool. A keyboard is a settlement, not a fact.
